Nicholas Nickleby

When Ralph Nickleby's brother dies, he sends his nephew Nicholas to teach at Dotheboys Hall, a Yorkshire school run by the brutal Wackford Squeers. Nicholas rebels, flees with the abused boy Smike, and tries to make his way in London, meeting actors, merchants and kind strangers. Dickens attacks the cruelty of cheap boarding schools while keeping the plot busy and comic. The strong characters and frequent dialogue help learners follow a long Victorian novel.
