An astronomer notices strange flashes on Mars, and soon metal cylinders land in England. Machines emerge, and the narrator flees as the invaders advance on London. Wells tells the story through one man's eyewitness account, mixing panic, curiosity and survival. The sentences are straightforward and the action is continuous, so learners can follow a famous invasion story in clear English.
