Major Kovalyov wakes up to find his nose missing from his face. The bewildered official embarks on a surreal quest through St. Petersburg to find his errant nose, which has taken on a life of its own and achieved a higher rank than he. Gogol's absurdist humor and descriptive style provide intermediate to advanced learners with engaging content and opportunities to practice understanding complex social satire.
