Julian West, a young Bostonian, falls into a hypnotic sleep in 1887 and wakes in the year 2000 to find a socialist utopia where poverty and crime have vanished. Guided by Dr Leete and his daughter Edith, he tours a city of cooperation and plenty. Bellamy's plain, expository prose and dialogue make this early science fiction easy to follow for learners.
