Abu'l-Ala al-Maarri, an eleventh-century blind Syrian poet, reflects on fate, society, mortality and hypocrisy in these translated verses. His tone shifts between biting satire and quiet pessimism, often in short, memorable lines. The compact poems and philosophical themes give learners a chance to read English poetry in manageable pieces.
