The social contract & discourses
Read this book freeEvery sentence translated, natural audio, one-tap dictionary
Rousseau asks what makes political authority legitimate and argues that it comes from the general will of the people, not from force or divine right. The book moves through short chapters of argument, with examples from ancient and modern states. The sentences are formal but the ideas are stated directly, so a learner can follow the reasoning with patience and a dictionary.
