《爱丽丝梦游仙境》开篇：英文原著带中文翻译

“and what is the use of a book,” thought Alice “without pictures or conversation?”

「一本书，」爱丽丝想道，「没有图画，也没有对话，那有什么用呢？」

So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

于是她在心里盘算着（她尽量盘算，因为炎热的天气使她昏昏欲睡，脑子发木），编一个雏菊花环的乐趣，值不值得费劲站起来去采雏菊，这时一只粉红眼睛的白兔忽然从她身边跑过。

There was nothing so very remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so very much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself,

这事本来没什么特别稀奇；爱丽丝听见那兔子自言自语，也不觉得多么离奇，

“Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!”

「哎呀！哎呀！我要迟到了！」

(when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural); but when the Rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before see a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of it, and burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge.

（后来她回想起来，才觉得当时本该对此感到奇怪，可那时一切似乎都很自然）；可是那兔子竟从背心口袋里掏出一只怀表，看了看，又匆匆赶路，爱丽丝便霍地站了起来，因为她猛然想到，自己从未见过有背心口袋的兔子，也从未见过能从背心口袋里掏出怀表的兔子，她满心好奇，便穿过田野追了上去，幸好及时看见它钻进树篱下一个大兔子洞。

In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.

转眼间爱丽丝也跟着钻了下去，压根儿没想过自己究竟怎样才能再出来。

The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well.

那兔子洞先是像隧道一样笔直向前延伸了一段，随后忽然向下倾斜，来得太突然，爱丽丝还没来得及想怎样停住，就发现自己正朝一口很深的井里坠落。

Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her and to wonder what was going to happen next.

要么是那口井太深，要么是她落得太慢，因为她往下坠的时候有充足的时间四下张望，心里琢磨接下来会发生什么事。

First, she tried to look down and make out what she was coming to, but it was too dark to see anything; then she looked at the sides of the well, and noticed that they were filled with cupboards and book-shelves; here and there she saw maps and pictures hung upon pegs.

起初，她试着往下看，想弄清自己会落到什么地方，可是下面太黑，什么也看不见；接着她看井壁，发现壁上满是碗柜和书架；她还不时看见地图和图画挂在木钉上。

She took down a jar from one of the shelves as she passed; it was labelled “ORANGE MARMALADE”, but to her great disappointment it way empty:

她经过时从一层架子上拿下一只罐子；罐子上贴着「橘子果酱」的标签，可让她大失所望的是，罐子是空的：

she did not like to drop the jar for fear of killing somebody, so managed to put it into one of the cupboards as she fell past it.

她不愿把罐子扔下去，怕砸死什么人，于是趁自己坠落经过一个碗柜时，设法把罐子放了进去。

“Well!” thought Alice to herself, “after such a fall as this, I shall think nothing of tumbling down stairs! How brave they’ll all think me at home! Why, I wouldn’t say anything about it, even if I fell off the top of the house!”

「好啊！」爱丽丝心里想，「摔过这么一跤之后，我从楼梯上滚下去也算不了什么了！家里人一定会觉得我多勇敢啊！哼，就算我从房顶上摔下来，我也一个字都不提！」

(Which was very likely true.)

（这倒很可能是真的。）

Down, down, down. Would the fall never come to an end!

往下，往下，往下。这坠落难道永远没个完吗！

“I wonder how many miles I’ve fallen by this time?” she said aloud. “I must be getting somewhere near the centre of the earth. Let me see: that would be four thousand miles down, I think —”

「不知道这会儿我已经落了多少英里了？」她大声说道。「我准是快到地心附近了。让我想想：那该是往下四千英里，我想……」

(for, you see, Alice had learnt several things of this sort in her lessons in the schoolroom, and though this was not a very good opportunity for showing off her knowledge, as there was no one to listen to her, still it was good practice to say it over)

（因为，你知道，爱丽丝在教室里上课时学过不少这类东西，虽说眼下并不是炫耀知识的好机会，因为没人听她说话，可把它念叨一遍总归是好的练习）

“— yes, that’s about the right distance — but then I wonder what Latitude or Longitude I’ve got to?”

「……对，差不多就是这个距离……可这样一来，我不知道自己到了什么纬度或经度？」

(Alice had no idea what Latitude was, or Longitude either, but thought they were nice grand words to say.)

（爱丽丝根本不知道纬度是什么，也不知道经度是什么，只觉得这些词儿挺气派，说出来好听。）

Presently she began again. “I wonder if I shall fall right through the earth! How funny it’ll seem to come out among the people that walk with their heads downward! The Antipathies, I think —”

过了一会儿，她又开口了。「不知道我会不会一直穿过地球！要是从那些头朝下走路的人中间钻出来，那该多滑稽呀！我想那准是『对跖人』……」
